Largest City of the Dead

The eruption of broken teeth
simple monuments scar the eye-
adorned with blue tile and faces

guard the gateway to salvation.
The vision of death is shrouded
in an endless blister white view.

Before the king of Jews birth
mortals cradled in muslin wrap
were caressed by hennaed hands.

Shadows of mourner shuffle,
soft plaster dust rises
causing a crust of tears on cheeks.

As Death’s sister Sorrow wails,
the mullahs call the next occupants
of Wadi al-Salaam to pray.
